PRO TIP: Early Bally and Stern Switch Capacitors

Bally pinball target switch capacitor

Early Bally and Stern pinballs (‘77-‘84) use .01uf ceramic capacitors on certain switches to increase sensitivity. There are a few places these are useful and others they need to be removed completely.

The switches that need them are stand up targets that are in the direct path of the ball, such a a target that can be hit by a fast moving flipped ball. Star rollovers are another place these caps are needed. Stand up switches behind a rubber such as switches behind drop targets don’t need them.

On the above mentioned switches it’s recommended that you replace them. As they age they are shorting out causing false switch readings.

Places they should be removed are the tilt bob and pop bumper switches. As these caps are aging they will cause false tilts and pop bumpers to fire when they shouldn’t. In some cases they can cause the pop bumpers to fire excessively overheating the coil and drive transistors.

I get these capacitors from Jameco, the part number I usually get is discontinued (2146302) but a suggested comparable replacement is 15270. I haven’t bought any in a while so I haven’t had a chance to try them.

You can get them here.

The body diameter and lead pitch is the same so they should be ok. I like these caps because others I’ve bought over the years are much smaller and can be more difficult to handle.
